Gifts inspired by Up and Away
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s…. great gifts for the superhero fans on your list! Including contributions
from Up and Away creators Kevin Hammonds and Kristin Bair!
Kevin’s picks: Inspiring heroes
“I would recommend Richard Donner’s Superman starring Christopher Reeve, and a box set of the 60’s Batman series starring Adam West. Both of those shows were instrumental to our inspiration for Up and Away.“
Kristin’s picks: Super sounds
“Kevin and I live in different cities (NYC and Philadelphia) so in order for him to hear the songs that we write together, I have to make recordings. My trusty Yeti mic does the trick…
“For audio inspiration, I love everything about The Incredibles score, especially the scope and the drive of the opening number; “Roxie” from Chicago—specifically the movie version—has fingerprints all over “Bad Never Felt So Good” from Up and Away; and Rodeo, the ballet by Aaron Copland—it is the song that was featured in the “Beef. It’s What’s for Dinner” ads from the ’90s—was the inspiration behind the harmonic structure of many of the Farmtown songs.”

Broadway Rose Staff Picks
Our staff contributed some of their favorite items which would make great gifts for anyone on your list—tools of the trade, gifts for musical lovers, and more!
Joe’s pick: Deconstructing Harold Hill
“This is a personal favorite and a must-have for serious fans of musical theatre!” Get it here.
Tyler’s pick: wireless headphones
“This is the nice pair of headphones for the common person, a person who might just want to listen to the Once soundtrack in peace while they do all the 2020 season seating in a particularly loud box office. It has the perfect balance of treble and bass, and blocks out just enough sound that you can still hear the bus about to hit you (and get out of the way,) without missing a note of sweet, sweet Rodgers & Hammerstein. Maybe it’s just a comfy vessel to listen to Hamilton for the 127th time, but it does the job and won’t break the bank.” Get them here.
Jeff’s pick: Bitelites
“A bitelite is a necessity for anyone working backstage during a show. Put a piece of blue painter’s tape over the light and you have a nice, soft, blue light that will let you see backstage without blinding the rest of the cast and crew or making yourself known to the audience. We wear them as a necklace and then put them in our mouths and bite down to turn them on—it leaves your hands free to accomplish a task while the light is on and then you simply let it drop out of your mouth to turn it off. There’s no fumbling around with on/off switches, and by having it in your mouth, it forces you to be quiet backstage!” Get them here.
Michael’s pick: A Christmas Carol: Manuscript Edition
“I love Charles Dickens, and I read A Christmas Carol every December—imagine how excited I am for next season’s production! In the meantime, I would be delighted if Santa brought me this gorgeous edition that includes a facsimile of the original manuscript with its detailed emendations, deletions, and insertions in Dickens’ own hand.” Get it here.
Amy’s pick: music stand light
“In addition to my role as development coordinator, I’ve been performing in the orchestra at Broadway Rose for years. A good music stand light helps whether you’re down in the pit, or tucked away on stage.” Get one here.
Vanessa’s pick: Passion Planner
“I would recommend the Passion Planner. It has monthly and weekly views, so I can see how everything relates to each other, and the days are divided into 30 minute blocks that start at 6 a.m. and end at 11 p.m.—every other planner that has the times only goes 8 a.m. – 8 p.m., not so great for theater! Bonus: it’s a female, minority founded, give-one-get-one company.” Get it here.
Sharon’s pick: lighted pens
“As artistic director I spend a lot of time watching productions from the darkened house. Lighted pens help me take notes without disturbing the performers or those seated around me. So helpful, and make great stocking stuffers.” Get them here.
Emily’s pick: Dreyer’s English
“As the communications manager, I am responsible for establishing and maintaining the style guide for the company, as well as writing or editing for many of our communications channels. My wishlist this year includes the new grammar guide from Random House copy chief Benjamin Dreyer, Dreyer’s English: An Utterly Correct Guide to Clarity and Style, which promises to be as entertaining as it is useful. Sounds like perfect bedtime reading for me – or for any grammar enthusiasts on your list.” Get it here.
Amaya’s pick: standing desk
“I think everyone who works at Broadway Rose has been subjected to a 20-minute monologue about how much I love this thing. Transitioning to a desk job was surprisingly hard on my back and this desk has been a total game changer!” Get one here.
Paul’s pick: Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay
“A must read for anyone seeing Up and Away, this is the story of two Jewish immigrants who come to New York in the 1930s and become involved in the creation of the comic book industry and the first superheroes.” Get it here.
