WHY WE OFFER ADULT DANCE CLASSES

Broadway Rose expanded its dance program to include classes for adults in 2021. “One of the reasons we’re trying to offer adult dance classes is because there aren’t many places for adults to learn how to dance,” said Managing Director Dan Murphy. While dance classes for children and teens abound, accessible musical theatre dance classes for adults are less common, and the prospect of attending a dance class for the first time can be intimidating for many adults. “The most common advice that I give to aspiring musical theatre actors is to go to dance class,” said Dan, “and our dance classes welcome all levels.”

This year we have scheduled adult dance classes in the winter, spring, and fall, with each series featuring a variety of musical theatre dance styles. Due to requests from students, we’ve also added an adult tap series in the spring and fall.

“We really want to invest in local artists and make sure that we’re giving them the chance to succeed,” said Education and Community Engagement Manager Amaya Santamaría. “That’s something that Broadway Rose cares about a lot: shoring up talent and being a training ground.”

Classes are taught by a variety of instructors; class fees are moderate with scholarships readily available; and class schedules are flexible. Students are able to pick up a class here and there, and all levels, beginner to proficient, are encouraged.

“Most musical theatre dance classes are for kids and teens, and adult contemporary is way above my pay grade,” said actress Lisamarie Harrison. “The Broadway Rose adult dance series was exactly what I was looking for: rotating teachers so we learned different warm-ups and cool downs, working with different choreography, and a class of adults of varying abilities and experience. It was challenging for me, but not out of reach.”
