GROWING THE NEXT GENERATION OF THEATRE LOVERS

Broadway Rose's education programs have experienced remarkable growth over the past several years, expanding opportunities for students of all ages to discover the joy of musical theatre. What began as a handful of seasonal camps has blossomed into a year-round lineup of classes, workshops, and performance experiences designed to inspire creativity, build confidence, and strengthen our community through the arts.

Before the pandemic, Broadway Rose offered four education programs: a Spring Break Camp, two Kids Summer Drama Camps, and one Teen Summer Camp. As programming cautiously returned in 2021, the theatre introduced eight modified programs to safely reconnect students with the stage. Since then, the program has grown every year. In 2026, Broadway Rose will offer an impressive 28 education programs, providing more opportunities for children, teens, and adults to participate.

For Education and Community Engagement Manager Amaya Santamaría, one program stands out above the rest. "My favorite program is our Teen Summer Production," she says. "A 13-day rehearsal process for a full-length musical is no joke, and we throw a ton at them and they take it in stride. They're a particularly talented bunch, but their passion and dedication are what really makes their productions so special."

Amaya also points to one of Broadway Rose's newest offerings as an exciting addition to the lineup: Stage the Song, an adult production-number workshop taught by Broadway Rose artist and choreographer Liberty Dolence. "Especially if you're a former or aspiring performer, Stage the Song lets you get back into a rehearsal process for a day and learn a fully staged musical number," she explains. "We've only done it once so far, but it was such a blast that we've already scheduled another workshop."

Behind every successful class is a dedicated team of teaching artists. Broadway Rose draws instructors from longtime educators, professional artists who have worked with the company, referrals from trusted colleagues, and an ongoing open call for teaching artist resumes. Each instructor is carefully selected through an interview process to ensure they're the right fit for the program and its students.

One of the biggest surprises about Broadway Rose's education program is just how much it is shaped by the community itself. "A lot of our programming is actually on our calendar because of student feedback," Amaya says. "Our community expressed interest in adult dance classes, so we started with a single all-levels class. Based on feedback, that's now grown into multiple levels of jazz and tap offered throughout the year. We want to offer the classes our community is most interested in, so we take feedback seriously as we continue to expand and improve our offerings."

That commitment to accessibility extends beyond the classroom. Broadway Rose awards between 14 and 18 scholarships each year, helping ensure financial barriers don't prevent students from participating. "The cost of participation in arts programs can often be inaccessible to families," Amaya says. "I'm very proud to say that in my time at Broadway Rose we've always been able to meet 100% of need."

As Broadway Rose celebrates 35 years of bringing musical theatre to our community, its education program continues to grow alongside it—creating new opportunities for students of every age to build skills, make lasting friendships, and discover the transformative power of live theatre.
