Kai de Mello-Folsom as Sam Phillips
Kai de Mello-Folsom is delighted to return to the Broadway Rose stage after playing the rascally Spit in last season’s Anything Goes! Regional credits include Hairspray (Corny Collins, Stumptown Stages), Silent Sky (Peter Shaw, Magenta Theater), Godspell (Jesus, multiple theaters), with memorable performances at the Kennedy Center, Disneyland, and Knott’s Berry Farm. Offstage, Kai has spent more than a decade producing film and television projects for companies like HBO, Apple, and Disney. His most recent project, Deaf President Now!, earned a 2025 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Documentary. Kai is especially grateful to his fiancée, Sophia, whom he met while returning to the stage in Portland with Legally Blonde, and can't wait to begin their next act together shortly after this show's final curtain.
Diego Solan Kjelland as Elvis Presley
Diego Solan Kjelland is stoked to be making his Broadway Rose debut portraying the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll! Diego holds a B.F.A. in musical theatre from the University of Montana and has spent the past three years working throughout the Portland theatre community as a performer, director, educator, and arts administrator. Recent performance credits include Pippin (Stumptown Stages), Bonnie & Clyde (Bridgetown Conservatory of Musical Theatre), It’s a Wonderful Life (Stumptown Stages), and Jersey Boys (Lakewood Theatre Company). He currently serves as the Associate Artistic Director of Bridgetown Conservatory of Musical Theatre and is honored to step into the role of Artistic Director on January 1, 2027. When he’s not onstage, Diego enjoys developing original musicals and creating opportunities for the next generation of theatre artists. He is thrilled to join the Broadway Rose family and rock the house!
Kaley McConnaughey as Dyanne
Kaley McConnaughey is a New York City-based actor, singer, and voiceover artist originally from Visalia, California. She is thrilled to be making her Broadway Rose debut! Her recent credits include Side by Side by Sondheim, Turn of the Screw (The Governess), Grease (Sandy), Beauty and the Beast (Babette), and A Christmas Carol (Belle). Hunter Semrau as Jerry Lee Lewis
Hunter Semrau is a New York based singer, actor, and musician originally from Canada. His recent credits include the national tours of Million Dollar Quartet and Million Dollar Quartet Christmas, regional productions of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Joseph), Urinetown (Bobby Strong), Grease (Doody), Shakespeare’s R&J (Juliet), and originating roles in the premieres of Goblins & Gates and Ally in New York City. He has spent the greater part of his life performing in musicals as well as playing both piano and guitar in various acoustic groups, dueling piano concerts, rock bands, and piano bars. T.J. Arko as W.S. "Fluke" Holland
T.J. Arko has been an active musician in Portland for the past 30 years, playing drums, classical percussion, bass, and guitar. He has played many musicals around the Portland area including Triangle and Snapshots: A Musical Scrapbook at Broadway Rose. He also performs in several tribute bands and jazz ensembles in the greater Portland area and beyond.

Director's Notes
When I first started working on Million Dollar Quartet, I was curious which musician would be my favorite. Interestingly enough, through my research I discovered my superstar was not one of the musicians but the man responsible for their success: record producer Sam Phillips. He was a 27-year-old disc jockey when he converted a vacant auto shop into a recording studio at 706 Union Street in Memphis and made Rock 'n' Roll history. That took guts. One of Sam’s many talents was to recognize a unique voice and capture it on vinyl, with all its glorious imperfections, and create magic. In fact, once, while recording a song for blues musician Jimmy Deberry, a phone rang. Sam knew he had a great take, so he sold the song with the phone ring in it!
The musicians featured in Million Dollar Quartet were young, green, and needed some major seasoning when they first met Sam Phillips. Elvis was only 18 when he came to Sam’s studio in 1953 to record a song for his mama’s birthday. Johnny Cash auditioned for Sam in 1954 with gospel songs. Sam was impressed with his voice but not with his selection of material; he told Johnny to go and return with a hit song. In 1958, Jerry Lee Lewis and his dad sold 33 dozen of their farm's eggs to fund the trip to meet Sam. Carl Perkins was the son of a sharecropper; Saturday nights the family would listen to the Grand Ole Opry on their battery-operated radio. In 1954, after hearing Elvis on the radio, Carl drove to Memphis to audition for Sam because he thought they had similar musical styles. He was right! Sam did like his style and his original material. Carl wrote “Blue Suede Shoes.”
Sam Phillips was the special sauce these musicians all needed. Sam had an ear for undiscovered talent. Without Sam’s genius and grit, these four upstarts’ careers could have taken a different turn. Quoting Johnny Cash, “I think Sam was a genius, it was like Camelot for one shining moment in history there, it was a unique situation, never before and never after, and he was the man that brought it all about.” In an A&E Biography, Sam said, “You need more than brains, you need faith.” He was a man who expected honesty and integrity, above all else.
Sam Phillips is the father of Rock 'n' Roll.
Not all of this information is in Million Dollar Quartet, but I love a good back story. Sam Phillips is now one of my heroes. Who knew?! Enjoy the show.
